The Green Barn
Where art and science ignite!
Imagine a place where children are inspired to discover the art and science of nature, a maker place that is a studio and a lab. At Gilroy Gardens’ Green Barn, the natural world is the inspiration for creating works of art in the studio and the basis for scientific discovery and exploration through the Nature Exchange.
Examine, discover, and swap objects from the natural world.
The Nature Exchange is a trading post and lab where young scientists can interact with, examine, discover, and swap objects from the natural world.
How does it work?
- Bring it in and Share! – Go on a nature treasure hunt and look for something that is interesting to you such as a rock, plant, fossil or other natural specimen; then take it to the Nature Exchange at The Green Barn.
- The Exchange – Learn about your new found item with our trained staff. The more you tell us about your item, the more points you earn.
- The Trader Account – Earned points can be used to trade for other interesting items. Use your points immediately or save some in your Nature Exchange computer bank account for future trades.
Find time for creativity.
The Art Studio is a creative space where budding artists can draw upon nature and the world of imagination for inspiration and creativity. Through hands-on activities, you can create your own artwork. Use leaf rubbings to create a dragonfly…make an animal with a collage from nature…take a picture and take your work home OR display on our magnetic artists boards.
Am I right-brained, left-brained...or both?!
Read a good book lately? Check to see if your favorite stories are listed! Use the research library for both science and art. Have a close look at the Big Brain Wall and answer that important question: Am I right-brained, left-brained...or both?!
Look Up For Inspiration!
