Where Volunteer Docents Make It Happen!
~~~Gilroy Gardens Docent Mission Statement~~~
Our Mission is to provide opportunities for our Guests to enjoy,
discover, learn, and gain a deeper awareness and understanding of
horticulture and of nature. We will assist our Guests whenever possible,
making their visit enjoyable while simultaneously expanding their vision
of plants, trees and nature.
What is a Docent?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By definition, a Docent is a teacher not on the regular faculty. At
Gilroy Gardens, a Docent is a True Volunteer, asking not what Gilroy Gardens can do for
them, but what they can do to make Gilroy Gardens a place where families
come to learn about nature and to enjoy our wonderful park.
Did You Know?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
---The Docent Panel and Gilroy Gardens sponsors our monthly BBQ or Pot Luck,
and this newsletter.
---If you are visiting the Park as a Guest, simply show
your ID card at the Front Gate turnstiles for entry. You do not need a
printed ticket.
Monarch Butterfly Update~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tom Lewis and Debbie Andrade installed 2 feeder hooks in the habitat. Thanks
to Tom for the design. Five dozen caterpillars were delivered on Monday,
June 30th. The habitat as been cleaned and milkweed has been placed in both
the small and main habitat. The small habitat has been moved into the public
part of Monarch Garden right outside the large habitat.
Docent Survey~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Docent Recruitment and Retention Committee is charged with the
responsibility of exploring ways to recruit new docents and retaining the
docents we currently have. So it would be very helpful to us if you would kindly
answer just a few questions for us and give us your input. Please download the
What's Up with the Bees?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Right after Labor Day for the past two seasons, we have had a cool spell.
The cool evening temperatures have killed the bees. The hive is being
modified to include a heater; hopefully it will keep the bees warm and
toasty when the evening temperatures drop. As soon as the installation is
complete and it has been tested, the bees will again appear in the Park. |
You Are My Sunshine!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Congratulations to Pearl Gonzalez! Her granddaughter, Arianna Pearl, was born
on May 22nd weighing 7 lbs. 12 oz.
Your Docent Panel --------------------------------------------> The Docent Panel represents you and
is striving to make Gilroy Gardens your home away from home. Suggestions and
complaints are welcome; we will address each one and give you a reply. If
you wish to make a more formal suggestion or have a question, you will find
copies of the Docent Suggestion and Grievance forms in the Docent Meeting
Room. You may complete and give them to Shelly or one of the above panel
members. Please let us know what you like and what needs improving, so we
can make the Docent experience more enjoyable for you. |
